Book Review: Words to Winners of Souls

Words to Winners of Souls. Horatius Bonar. 1877. 72 pages.

In April, I read Everlasting Righteousness by Horatius Bonar. I LOVED it. Words to Winners of Souls was my second Bonar book to read. I enjoyed it certainly, but not to the same degree. Everlasting Righteousness, I felt, was relevant to every single believer. Words to Winners of Souls, on the other hand, mainly applies to preachers or ministers. Its truth is good to know, but there are some things only evangelists and preachers can directly apply.

The chapters include, "The Importance of a Living Ministry," "The Minister's True Life and Walk," "Past Defects," "Ministerial Confession," and "Revival in the Ministry." The fourth chapter on confession is quite unique, it is indeed a whole chapter listing hundreds of things that ministers might need to confess.

I still liked this one. Bonar is a good discovery. I look forward to reading more!

Favorite quotes:
Men cannot but feel that if religion is worth anything, it is worth everything.
Bold preaching is the only preaching that is owned of God.
It is not opinions that man needs: it is TRUTH. It is not theology; it is God. It is not religion: it is Christ. It is not literature and science; but the knowledge of the free love of God in the gift of His only-begotten Son.
Lord, let that mind be in us that was in Thee! Give us thy tears to weep; for, Lord, our hearts are hard toward our fellows.
The soul and eternity of one man depends upon the voice of another!
It is only a free gospel that can bring peace, and it is only a free gospel that can make men holy.
Luther's preaching was summed up in these two points--"that we are justified by faith alone, and that we must be assured that we are justified."
We are not in earnest either in preaching or in hearing. If we were, could we be so cold, so prayerless, so inconsistent, so slothful, so worldly, so unlike men whose business is all about eternity? We must be more in earnest if we would win souls. We must be more in earnest if we would walk in the footsteps of our beloved Lord, or if we would fulfill the vows that are upon us.
